Last week we covered the all-new 2020 Kia Soul that made its debut at the 2018 LA Auto Show, so this week we thought we’d cover another debuting vehicle, the 2019 Kia Niro EV! The Kia Niro EV is an all-electric variation of the popular hybrid crossover that was introduced just a few years ago. This means that drivers will have all the benefits of driving a crossover, with the added bonus of not needing to pay for gas. The release date is expected to arrive before the end of 2018, which means it could be arriving any day now.

Specs & Features of the Niro EV
The most impressive part of the brand-new 2019 Niro EV is without a doubt its powertrain. Its 64-kWh battery is tethered to an electric motor that allows for a combined output of 201 horsepower as well as 291 pound-feet of torque. Power like that isn’t common in affordable, all-electric vehicles like the Niro. But what’s even more impressive, is that the EPA estimates the Niro EV will have an all-electric range of 239 miles.
But the impressive bits don’t stop there. Something called the Combined Charging System DC fast-charge comes as standard equipment, and it means that you’ll be able to charge your car in 30 minutes to allow for 100 miles of driving or charge up to 80-percent battery capacity in just 75. Utilizing an ordinary 240v charger at 7.2 kWh will net you a full charge in 9.5 hours.
Of course, there is much more to the Niro EV than just its electric powertrain, such as its sleek and sophisticated design and the host of technology packed inside and out. By technology, we don’t just mean the entertainment features such as its 7” display audio screen or 6-speaker audio system, but the laundry list of active safety features as well. That means the Kia Drive Wise Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems, such as Forward Collision Warning, Driver Attention Warning and many others.

when do you expect this to be available ?
would this qualify for the Texas EV credit and Federal credit in full?
There is no such thing as a Texas EV credit; Texas has no state income tax to be able to credit! It does qualify for the full $7,500 tax credit, but don’t hold your breath waiting for the car to be offered here. The Hyundai Kona has been out for a while and, according to Hub Hyundai in Houston/Katy, there is currently no plan to bring it to Texas.
So what is this Niro EV that is currently at my home in Dallas which I purchased in Austin.
I just spoke with sales managers at several Kia dealerships in Houston and Dallas, here’s the deal as of July 2019… the Kia mothership will not allow dealerships to sell the Niro EV unless they have a certified technician in place. There is currently only one dealership in Texas (out of Austin) with such a certified tech. For now, if you want this model in TX, you need to purchase from Austin or import from out of State. However, if servicing is required (I’m not referencing cabin air filter changes, rather a catastrophic failure like car won’t start) – you’ll need to get that done in Austin. That is, until other dealerships get techs certified.
